IDS - Intrusion Detection Systems are extensively used in protecting critical assetts in many industries. The methodology for deploying an IDS system will vary based on the geographical location, size and topography of the site being protected. IDS systems are usually not based on a single security device, such as motion detectors or CCTV cameras, but rather a combination of different technologies that together provide protection. IDS systems are normally used as a first line of defense in a layered security infrastructure.
The ultimate purpose of IDS is to notify responders and responsible parties of a detection along the perimeter of protection before the intrusion penetrates the first layer of security. This provides valuable response time needed to mitigate a security incident that may cause harm or damage to the premises or occupants.
IDS systems are not without their issues. The different technologies sometimes do not easily integrate or are chosen without considering all of the operational capabilities and limitations of the components. Installations that have these issues will be plagued with excessive false alarms which will render the IDS system unrelaible causing the operator to lose faith the technology and for the most part ignore the alarms.
Experience with diversified sensor technologies is paramaount to designing, installing and commissioning IDS systems. Knowledge of the operational functionality of the sensors used is key in determining how to properly correct issues when they arise. A single faulty can cause a system to become problematic and unreliable, exposing the protected premise to unathorized intrusion and vulnerability.
